PHS’s Green City Youth program seeks to inspire youth and improve communities through horticulture, by cultivating student appreciation and interest in gardening and nature.

Based on Philadelphia Green, PHS’s successful urban greening program, Green City Youth teaches that trees, gardens, parks, green streetscapes, and other green spaces improve the health and well being of the urban environment.

Green City Youth (GCY) provides students with fun and interesting activities in which community greening is both educationally relevant and integrated across K-12 curricula through a service-learning model. The program introduces students to greening activities
within the surrounding community, with the hope of opening their eyes to the power of community stewardship.

Green City Youth works directly with Philadelphia school students and their teachers in a limited number of schools each year.  Teachers interested in applying to the program must first complete PHS’s Green City Teachers basic training course.

During the 2006-2007 school year Green City Youth engaged over 200 students collectively at Penn Alexander, Bache Martin, Hunter School, Kensington Culinary Arts High School, and Sulzberger Middle School.

During the 2007-08 school year, GCY staff will be working in seven Philadelphia schools: St. Francis Xavier Elementary, Mastery Charter-- Thomas campus, Longstreth Elementary, Bache Martin School, Wilson Public School, McKinley School, and Cook-Wissahickon School.

The Green City Youth program was launched in 2005 through a generous two-year grant from the National Recreation Foundation. The program is currently supported by the following grantors:

Bennett Foundation
GlaxoSmithKline Foundation
Hamilton Family Foundation
Lincoln Financial Group Foundation
The Rosenlund Family Foundation
Joseph Kennard Skilling Foundation
