The Benefits of Trees

Why is the loss of tree cover a regional problem in Southeastern Pennsylvania? Trees are the ultimate multi-taskers. They provide many visual, environmental, social and economic benefits to urban, suburban and rural communities.

Visual
Trees add a natural character, making communities more attractive and providing beauty and color. They help create distinct places, as well as reflect and accentuate regional character.

Environmental
The environment is cleaner and healthier because of trees. Trees can mitigate flooding. Leaves intercept storm run-off, and roots absorb heavy rainfall. Tree buffers improve streams by filtering polluting run-off, shading and cooling waters to improve fish habitat. The cooling effects of trees helps alleviate the “heat island” effect and slows the formation of ozone. Trees also absorb pollutants and store carbon, which can slow global warming.

Social
Trees and greenery increase the sense of well-being and relaxation. They can screen harsh views and increase privacy in dense environments. Tree-lined streets also limit a driver’s field of vision, helping cars to slow down and pedestrians to feel safer.

Economic
A 2004 study by the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania concluded that the adjacency (within 100 feet) to a street tree boosted house prices in Philadelphia by 14%. Trees in shopping districts create a more welcoming comfortable place. Shoppers are inclined to linger, pay higher prices and spend more.
