ITINERARY

[Note: Where meals are included, "B"=Breakfast, "L"=Lunch, "D"=Dinner]

Monday, July 21                           Baron’s Cove Inn, Sag Harbor

We’ll get an early start from Philadelphia this morning. There will be two or three places to board the bus, to be determined when the passenger list is complete.  We’ll drive to Sag Harbor on the south fork and have a box lunch at our hotel.  You may want to take your lunch to the Inn’s roof deck to enjoy the views of Sag Harbor Cove across the street.

In mid-afternoon, we’ll drive to Sagaponack to visit gardens on a private estate.  The carefully tended gardens include one devoted to native seashore plants.  Bridge Gardens Trust, our next stop, was created about twenty years ago. There is a large knot garden surrounded by herb beds plus topiaries and hundreds of roses. We’ll enjoy wine and a light meal in these surroundings before returning to the Inn.                                                       (L,D)

Tuesday, July 22                          Baron’s Cove Inn, Sag Harbor

This morning we’ll take a ferry to Shelter Island and then another ferry to Greenport on the north fork to see the private garden of a garden designer whose late husband started a well-known wholesale nursery on Long Island.  She has used interesting plants and grasses throughout her garden. She also designed the next garden we’ll see.

The second garden was started in 1986, and the owners moved there year-round in 1996.  Two acres of what once was part of a potato field now have ponds, a conifer garden, crepe myrtle around the pool, and wonderful pots everywhere.  Next we’ll drive to the Borghese Vineyards for a short walk in the vineyard, a wine tasting, and a buffet lunch.  We’ll return to Sag Harbor in mid-afternoon; the remainder of the day is at leisure to visit the many shops along the main street or just enjoy strolling through the historic district             (B,L)

Wednesday, July 23                 Baron’s Cove Inn, Sag Harbor

Today we’ll explore gardens on the south fork.  The first garden features meticulously shaped shrubs defining areas and bordering paths.  The owner is especially fond of variegated box.  You’ll discover a bocce court surrounded by a juniper and copper beech hedge.  The next garden is the work of one of the area’s most noted garden designers.  This garden provides a delightful surprise at every turn plus stunning use of stone in the Japanese style garden area and around the pool.  Stately trees become a focal point and perennial beds border a large lawn.

We’ve allowed free time in the village of East Hampton to browse in the shops and choose your lunch place before visiting this same designer’s own garden to see more of his unique style.  He has a great respect for nature and uses both indigenous and exotic plants in his designs

This evening we’ll walk to dinner at the American Hotel on Main Street in Sag Harbor.             (B,D)

Thursday, July 24                    Sag Harbor/ Philadelphia

After breakfast, we’ll check out of the Inn and drive to the garden of another garden designer that has been featured in countless books and magazines. The modern house overlooks a fresh water pond and the various garden areas edge a large lawn.  At nearby Marder’s Nursery we’ll have a tour with extra time to purchase plants, explore their gift shop, and enjoy a. box lunch before boarding the bus for the drive back to Philadelphia.  Refreshments will be served en route.                                                                                              (B,L)

**Because the bus cannot drive onto some of the private properties, it will be necessary to walk up some fairly long driveways.

Private gardens are open at the kind permission of the owners.  Although they make every effort to keep dates arranged for visits, particular visits may not always be possible due to personal commitments, changes of ownership or other reasons. Every effort will be made to substitute gardens of equal interest.
