City Gardens Contest

The City Gardens Contest gives Philadelphia residents recognition for their skillful and imaginative gardening and offers them the opportunity to compete for prizes in several gardening categories. Launched in 1975, the contest now receives 500 entries with teams of judges visiting each contestant during July and August.

Home gardeners may enter front or backyard flower or vegetables gardens, as well as gardens grown exclusively in containers. Community gardeners may participate by entering their vegetable gardens, flower gardens/sitting parks, street planters and window boxes, or blocks with trees and front yards.

Judging
Volunteers are invited to judge based on their knowledge and accomplishments in gardening. Vegetables and flower gardens, garden blocks and green blocks are judged for maintenance and horticultural practices, variety, color and suitability of the plantings, design and total visual effects with extra points awarded for imagination and ingenuity.

Awards
Winning gardeners and judges are invited to an Awards ceremony held in mid-October when the winning gardeners are honored at a gala event. All gardeners entering the Contest are recognized with a Pennsylvania Horticultural Society certificate for their participation. Contestants are also given the opportunity to receive the judges' notes on their gardens.

How to Participate

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society believes that city gardeners deserve praise and support for their work and ability to cope with sometimes difficult growing conditions. The City Gardens Contest offers gardeners recognition, and is a rewarding experience for both contestants and judges.
