 | | Tuesday, March 23, 2010 | 6:30pm - 8:00pm Evening Lecture: Charles Darwin the Experimental Botanist Presented by Dr. Karen Snetselaar Open to the public and members
Charles Darwin is recognized worldwide for developing and disseminating ideas on evolution and natural selection, but his work as an experimental scientist is less well known. Dr. Karen Snetselaar will discuss Darwin’s role as a botanist who carried out a number of elegant experiments directed at understanding wide-ranging topics, such as plant movement in response to light, mechanisms by which plants prevent self-fertilization, and responses of insectivorous plants to different food sources. This talk will describe some of these botanical experiments and their impact on later plant biologists.
Dr. Karen Snetselaar is professor and chair of biology at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. She is a botanist whose research is focused on plant symbiosis and fungi and has published extensively in science journals.
Following the lecture, American Philosophical Society director and curator Sue Ann Prince will offer a tour of the APS Museum’s current exhibition, Dialogues with Darwin. It traces the history of Darwin’s theory of evolution through natural selection for more than a century, beginning prior to the 1830s, when Darwin jotted down his first thoughts about evolution, and continuing into the 1940s, when his theory was accepted as the basis for all life sciences. The exhibit is in Philosophical Hall, 104 South Fifth Street, and will be open at 5 pm. Refreshments will be served after the tour.
