 | | Thursday, November 5, 2009 | 7:45am - 5:30pm COACH TOUR: Grounds for Sculpture and Morven Museum & Garden Open to the public and members
Travel with us to Princeton and Hamilton, New Jersey, and enjoy a day of art and history in two very different garden settings.
In 1984, sculptor and philanthropist J. Seward Johnson envisioned a public sculpture garden and museum in Hamilton, NJ. His desire was to make contemporary sculpture more accessible and to offer people from all backgrounds the opportunity to become comfortable with contemporary art.
Grounds For Sculpture was conceived as a place where audiences could experience sculpture in a familiar, accessible, and informal setting. The collection of over 240 works includes sculptures by Clement Meadmore, Anthony Caro, Beverly Pepper, Kiki Smith, and George Segal.
We will enjoy a guided tour of the sculpture, followed by lunch, either in the café or fabulous Rat’s Restaurant, and will have plenty of time to explore the extensive grounds.
Next we will travel to Morven Museum & Garden, the former site of the New Jersey Governor’s Mansion and the eighteenth-century home of Richard Stockton. Originally part of a 5,500-acre tract purchased from William Penn in 1701 by the first Richard Stockton to settle in Princeton, Morven encompasses 150 acres of land purchased in 1754 by his grandson, also Richard Stockton, one of the leading attorneys in the American colonies and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Four more generations of Stocktons resided at Morven through the early twentieth century.
General Robert Wood Johnson, chairman of the Johnson & Johnson company, was the first non-family member to reside at Morven. He was followed by five New Jersey governors when Morven served as the Governor’s Mansion from 1945 to 1981.
We will tour the house and then tour the garden on our own, where the horticulturist will be available for questions. Bus pick-ups are available at PHS and the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park. Fee includes coach travel, a lunch voucher at Grounds For Sculpture, tours and entrance fees, and snacks.
