COACH TOUR: Private Gardens Near Baltimore
Open to the public and members
Four extraordinary gardeners near Baltimore, MD, will welcome us to their private havens for an enjoyable day of looking at stellar plants and fascinating landscapes.
Our first stop, in northern Baltimore, offers an amazing assemblage of trees and shrubs, including conifers and collections of Japanese umbrella pines and Japanese maples punctuated with interesting boulders, walls, and pathways on two acres. Next we’ll visit a 45-year-old garden consisting primarily of woodland with mossy paths bordered by mature rhododendron, azaleas, ferns, and shade-loving perennials. In sunny areas, two ponds provide the focus for beds of bulbs, perennials, and unusual shrubs. An interest in sculpture is evident throughout; some sculptures were created by the owner.
At the third property, we’ll enjoy a box lunch before exploring lovely gardens and pool areas decorated by a perennial border with masses of large containers blooming to perfection. Interesting plants, striking color combinations, and intriguing garden furniture and sculpture embellish the areas around the house. The final garden, a joint labor of love over two decades, has taken over every inch of a five-acre property. A resplendent series of garden rooms and pleasant woodland paths invite us to stroll.
Bus pick-up locations are the Horticulture Center in Fairmount Park (7:15 am) and PHS, 20th and Arch streets (7:30 am). We plan to return to PHS by 6:30 pm and to the Horticulture Center by 6:45.
