Evening Lecture: NIWAKI, the Art of Pruning, Training and Shaping Trees the Japanese Way
Presented by Jake Hobson
Open to the public and members

Niwaki means *garden tree*, defining it as something grown in the garden rather than the wild. Its implications, however, are much broader, as we will experience when Jake Hobson introduces us to a fascinating look at how the Japanese garden may be seen as landscape, intrinsically linked to Japan itself through the deliberate shaping of its trees.

The trees in these gardens are trained and pruned to reflect the landscapes and culture, and the various techniques have grown into art forms that we in the West refer to as “cloud pruning”. Using examples from well known temple gardens in Kyoto, little-visited temples in obscure mountainous regions and private gardens all over the country, Jake will cover the main species and styles, and suggest how we may adapt these ideas to our own Western gardens.

Jake Hobson studied sculpture at Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London, where he became interested in the culture of Japan. A trip there introduced him to Japanese gardens, and the idea of pruning trees to fit into a garden landscape. After returning to the United Kingdom he worked for five years at Architectural Plants nursery in Sussex where he applied Japanese pruning techniques to a range of plants. He now operates a business with his wife, Keiko, importing tripod ladders and pruning tools from Japan, and potters around his small nursery in Dorset. His book, *Niwaki, Pruning, Training and Shaping Trees the Japanese Way*, was published by Timber Press in 2007 and will be available for signing after his presentation.

The McLean Library will be open until 5:45 pm this evening. The lecture will be followed by a book signing and light refreshments and wine.
