The 2008 Woody Plant Conference includes lectures on distinctive and reliable trees and shrubs, Lyme Disease in Pennsylvania, history and uses of roses, the process of wild-collected plants to market, and new woody plants for colder climates.
Speakers include John Elsley, director of horticulture at Klehm’s Song Sparrow Farm, who has worked at the Royal Horticultural Society in Great Britain, the Missouri Botanical Garden, and Park Seed Co., Inc.; Linda Guy, director of new product development at Carolina Nurseries in South Carolina; garden designer and author Sean B. Hogan, who specializes in appropriate plants for the Pacific Northwest; entomologist and Lyme Disease expert Steve Jacobs; internationally recognized freelance plantsman, writer, author, lecturer and plant explorer Roy Lancaster; and Stephen Scanniello, who is best known for transforming the Cranford Rose Garden of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden into one of the world’s most acclaimed rose gardens.
The Woody Plants Conference is co-sponsored by PHS, Longwood Gardens, the Morris Arboretum of the University of Pennsylvania, the Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College, and Tyler Arboretum. The conference includes lunch and tours of Swarthmore’s Scott Arboretum.
