Philadelphia Green receives top honor from the
Garden Club of America

(May 2008) The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Philadelphia Green program has been awarded the Elizabeth Craig Weaver Proctor Medal from the Garden Club of America. The Garden Club’s most prestigious award for a non-member, the Proctor medal recognizes an individual or organization that demonstrates “exemplary service and creative vision.”

The Garden Club stated that Philadelphia Green’s work “not only improves the quality of life for the six million residents of the region, it empowers citizens to integrate horticulture in the fabric of scores of communities, actively serving as a paradigm for cities across the United States.”

“It’s a big honor for Philadelphia Green to be recognized by the Garden Club of America,” said PHS Executive Vice President Blaine Bonham, who accepted the award in May during the Club’s annual meeting in Norfolk, Va. “PHS and GCA have had a long and fruitful partnership. From the beginning, members of the Philadelphia Committee of the Garden Club of America have been very supportive of our efforts, providing volunteers and funding specific projects like the renovation of the Azalea Garden in Fairmount Park and the installation of a watering system at Aspen Farms community garden.”

Established in 1923, the Garden Club of America is an umbrella organization for United States and Canadian local garden clubs. The Club’s mission includes an effort to restore, improve, and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement.
