PHS Hosts New Gardening Show on Philly.com

A new gardening video show, Gardeners’ Studio, starring Philadelphia Flower Show designer Sam Lemheney and Meadowbrook Farm head grower Jessica Story, premiered Sept. 17, on Philly.com, the primary news website in Philadelphia.

A presentation of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Philly.com, Gardeners’ Studio explores a different topic each week, provides a to-do list from the gardening calendar, and answers questions from viewers – all with a touch of humor and loads of expertise.

The shows are set on the beautiful grounds of the PHS affiliate Meadowbrook Farm, the grand estate and retail nursery in Abington Township.

Episode 4:
Dividing Perennials

Dividing perennials is an annual autumn task that keeps the Meadowbrook Farm staff busy. Jessica Story, head grower at Meadowbrook, recommends the Home and Garden Information Center of Clemson University as a great resource for learning when, where, and how to divide specific species of perennials. It even describes the different root systems you’ll likely encounter.

A second site worth visiting is this one from Fine Gardening, which details 10 tips on dividing perennials . Helpful hints from that list include identifying the healthiest specimens and maximizing your soil’s potential for successful propagation. Also review the extensive perennial list to see how your favorite species should be divided.

Taking these simple steps now will lead to a happy, healthy garden come spring!

Episode 3:
Great Containers for Autumn

Happily, the coming of autumn doesn't mark the end of the gardening season. For many gardeners, it's the beginning of a “third season” of glorious container color, which you can see in the many cool-weather combinations that are possible. Pansies, ivies, ornamental kale, and chrysanthemums are just a few of the great plants that can spruce up your summer pots, or use to create whole new designs.

Episode 2:
Planting a Fall Vegetable Garden

Fall veggies can be divided into two categories: semi-hardy and hardy. Semi-hardy crops—those that can tolerate light frost—include beets, carrots, cauliflower, celery, and lettuce. The roster for hardy vegetables, which can endure a chillier clime, includes broccoli, cabbage, radish, spinach, and everyone’s favorite, Brussels sprouts.

The Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska Lincoln has a thorough list of both types of vegetables, as well as tips for when and how to grow them. Another online resource for fall gardens is the aptly named veggiegardeningtips.com. There you’ll find extensive information on cultivating and caring for your home-grown produce. When fall starts to fade and the colder months arrive, visit wintergardeningtips.com for ways of adding winter interest to your property.

Maintaining a lush, green lawn in autumn is easier than ever thanks to the wide range of online resources. One invaluable website is that of The American Lawn Care Industry. Surf around for lawn care tips, interesting factoids, and descriptions of different types of grass (cool season, warm season, etc.).

A second resource with a simple, straightforward name is AllAboutLawns.com. Here you can converse with other people who love their lawns on the web forums or sign up for a lawn analysis. All About Lawns can also help you track down lawn care services in your area.

If you’re a resident of the Philadelphia region and need to buy or rent lawn or garden tools, visit Mantis.com or Geppert Lumber of Roslyn, PA. The folks at Philadelphia.com have also assembled a list of 31 tool-rental companies, one of which is bound to have exactly what you’re looking for.

Good luck with the lawn!
