PHS Fast Facts
ORIGINS: The Pennsylvania
Horticultural Society (PHS), established in 1827 as a not-for-profit
organization, is America's first horticultural society. In 1829,
PHS produced the nation's first flower show.
MISSION: PHS motivates people to improve
the quality of life and create a sense of community through horticulture.
STAFF: Employs a staff of more than 100
who work in a wide range of areas, including gardening events, urban
greening, horticultural education and publishing, and more.

Flower Show, Kids Grow Expo,
City Gardens Contest,
Azalea Garden Party, Suburban
Greening Award.
PHILADELPHIA GREEN PROGRAM: The largest
and most comprehensive urban greening program in the nation. Philadelphia
Green provides supplies, technical assistance, and encouragement
to more than 800 organized community groups and revitalizes Philadelphia's
treasured open spaces.
MEMBERSHIP: PHS
members enjoy benefits year-round including free ticket (s)
to the annual Philadelphia Flower Show, access to lectures, workshops,
tours, expert guided trips around the world, subscription to the
Society's bi-monthly Green Scene
magazine and the monthly PHS News
newsletter, and privileges at the Society's McLean Library (home
to more than 14,000 titles devoted to gardening and horticulture).
PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW: The nation's
largest indoor flower show blooms in Philadelphia every March at
the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Features the country's premier
landscape designers and florists who turn 10 acres of the Convention
Center into a floral fantasy world with exotic plants and eclectic
designs.
In addition to the major garden displays, the
Flower Show hosts world-renowned
competitions in horticulture and artistic arranging, hundreds of
gardening lectures and demonstrations, special events, a mammoth
indoor Marketplace, and a city-wide Flower Show Week celebration
throughout downtown Philadelphia.
