2009 PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW
TO EXPLORE
“BELLA ITALIA”

Philadelphia, Pa. The landscapes and culture of Italy, which have enchanted visitors and artists for centuries, will serve as inspiration for the 2009 Philadelphia Flower Show, “Bella Italia.” The celebration of the natural beauty, art, food, music and people of Italy will be held March 1-8, 2009, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

A staircase stage will feature operatic performances and other musical presentations, while strolling musicians wander the Show floor. The Central Feature of the 2009 show will capture the majesty of Rome and its formal style and gardens. Show exhibitors also will pay tribute to the other distinctive regions and cities of Italy:

  • Milan, the international mecca of fashion and design.

  • Florence, the Renaissance city of Michelangelo, Botticelli and Donatello.

  • Tuscany, the paradise of lush, rolling hills, vineyards, sunflowers, cyprus, olive trees, and extraordinary cuisine.

  • Venice, where water gardens, fountains and canals are an integral part of life.

  • Spello, the medieval Umbrian village that celebrates L’Infiorata, a festival known for its works of art made of flower petals and herbs.

  • And the Italian Riviera, the resort that will be represented at the show by an orchid-filled atrium.

“Bella Italia” will also highlight the strong ties between Italy and Philadelphia, a city with a great Italian-American community, fine restaurants, and, of course, the lively Italian Market.

“We’re going to showcase not only the diverse gardens of Italy, but the culture and what you experience when you go to this beautiful and intriguing country,” explained Flower Show Designer Sam Lemheney. “It’s about the allure of Italy, the artistry, and the state of mind.”

The 2009 Philadelphia Flower Show is presented by PNC and produced by The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1827. Through its membership, Flower Show, education programs and greening efforts, the Society motivates people to improve the quality of life and create a sense of community through horticulture.
