The "Ribbon of Gold" Garden at Eastern State Penitentiary

On the long terraces, which flank the front of the Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site, a wonderful border of woody shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials thrives. The prison is located on Fairmount Avenue between Corinthian and 22nd Streets.

This intriguing garden is truly an urban gem and is primarily maintained by volunteer efforts, all 8,000 square feet of it! This sun-soaked, south-facing location creates a challenging and rewarding experience for its volunteer gardeners. The plantings provide seasonal interest year long, and also serve as habitat for birds, bees and butterflies. Meet at the entrance on Fairmount Avenue.
