A Taste And Sip Of Italy In Philadelphia

Philadelphia (January 2009) – A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and Danny DeVito!

Inspired by the culture and landscapes of Italy, the 2009 Philadelphia Flower Show “Bella Italia” -- coming to the Pennsylvania Convention Center March 1-8 -- will showcase Italian wines, foods, and recipes by Philadelphia’s best chefs

New this year, visitors can sample a selection of Italian wines in a wine tasting room and purchase their favorites at the Wine and Spirits Store, operated by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. The more than 100 red, white and sparkling wines, including those made by the Bolla, Frescobaldi, Nozzole, Ruffino, Villa Antinori and Folonari wineries, will be offered at the on-site store. Popular favorites and hard-to-find specialties, priced from $7.99, will be sold.

Film and television star Danny DeVito will visit the Flower Show on Saturday, March 7, to introduce his own brand of the classic after-dinner liqueur, limoncello.

The free tastings will be held in Room 204B located along the Show Concourse. The PLCB Wine and Spirits Store will be located at the nearby Show Bridge.

Samplings of Italian treats also will be offered daily in a new, cozy Italian Piazza where authentic Italian-made products such as pasta, cookies, chocolate, canned tomatoes, clothing, and ceramics will be for sale. The Piazza will also be located on the Show Bridge.

From spicy Italian to heart-healthy, recipes from Philadelphia’s best chefs will be demonstrated live for all to view. The roster includes Bistro Romano’s Chef Ricardo Rodriquiz, La Scala’s Chef Joseph Nocella and  Le Castagne’s Chef Brian Wilson. Hosted by Chef Joseph Shilling and assisted by the chefs and students of the International Culinary School of the Art Institute of Philadelphia, the presentations will be held three times each day with a special “Totally Italian” demo at noon. Non-Italian offerings will be demonstrated by celebrity chefs Susanna Foo, Georges Perrier, and Joe Poon.
