2007 Annual Report
Meadowbrook Farm, an affiliate of PHS
Nestled in leafy Abington Township, Meadowbrook Farm is a glorious 23-acre estate that includes spectacular display gardens, a retail garden center, and a gift shop.
In 2006-07, sales at the garden center and gift shop, which stock a large array of high-quality plants and garden accessories, increased over the previous year. Open House events held in June, October, and December attracted new visitors, many of them PHS members, with shopping, family activities, and special sales. PHS members enjoy a 10 percent discount on most purchases at Meadowbrook.
Meadowbrook Farm is perhaps best known as the former estate of Mr. and Mrs. J. Liddon Pennock, Jr. Mr. Pennock was an avid plantsman and participant in the Philadelphia Flower Show. Today, the Meadowbrook staff wows Flower Show crowds with its expertise in “forcing” thousands of plants into bloom each year for many exhibits at the Philadelphia Flower Show, a long process that begins in early fall. General manager John Story says, “Growing for the Flower Show is an honor and a huge challenge, as everything must be carefully orchestrated to bloom in time for opening day.”
The experienced Meadowbrook staff hosts year-round group tours of the formal gardens and house and provides PHS members and guests with a lively schedule of educational workshops on many of today’s most popular gardening topics.
The Meadowbrook home and gardens have undergone a number of improvements since coming under the PHS umbrella. Over the past year, the gardens have benefited from new plantings and a fence to prevent deer damage. A new greenhouse was also added to accommodate growing demands from exhibitors for Flower Show plants.
